Duterte warns De Lima: ‘Don’t make me spill your secrets.’

The fight between Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Leila De Lima continued at Camp Aguinaldo last Friday.

During the founding anniversary of the Volunteers against Crime and Corruption (VACC), Duterte accused the DOJ of allowing high-profile criminals and illegal drug pushers to turn the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) into a shabu lab.

“I’m undemocratic? Look at what you’re doing,” the Davao mayor spat back at De Lima. “Here are guys who are supposed to be in prison, paying retribution for their sins against humanity, but instead you are fattening them.”

Last 2014, the law enforcement group raided Bilibid, which is under DOJ, and found out how high-profile prisoners lived like kings while in prison. The drug lords, in particular, conducted their businesses inside Bilibid.

Duterte and De Lima had been at odds with each other when De Lima, who lead the Commission on Human Rights before becoming DOJ secretary, called the mayor a “dangerous loose cannon” and even threatened to file a case against him for his links with the Davao Death Squad or DDS.

Mayor Duterte denied the accusations and insisted that DDS stands for “Davao Development System.” He also claimed firsthand knowledge of the “skeletons in her closet.” He said, “Why, does she think I don’t have anything on her? I have something better, it will make her cry.”

Sec. De Lima has yet to respond.
