DENR Sec. Lopez to Chinese Miners: ‘Lumayas Kayo Sa Pilipinas’

Sec. Gina Lopez hurled a stern warning against Chinese miners who are violating Philippine laws. She told erring miners, “Lumayas kayo sa Pilipinas.”

The secretary of Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) singled out Chinese miners as the leading violators of environmental laws in the country.

Lopez halted giving out mining permits for now and vowed to meticulously scrutinize incoming applications.

Recently, the Berong Nickel Corporation in Quezon, Palawan was suspended for dumping 1,200 metric tons of illegal waste to surrounding provinces.

“We will not issue what we call a mineral ore export permit (MOEP) not until such time they assure the government of the seaworthiness of their vessels,” regional head of Mines and Geosciences Bureau Roland A. de Jesus told Business World.

Four more Chinese mining firms were suspended after DENR's investigation, namely: Zambales Diversified Metals Corp., LNL Archipelago Minerals Inc., BenguetCorp Nickel Mines Inc., and Eramen Minerals Inc.
